Joan Gordon

A sewing and craft designer who has been involved in the sewing and craft industry for approximately twenty five years. Joan has taught various crafts and sewing techniques extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand and the UK and for several years was the Queensland State Manager for McCalls Patterns and later created her own business ‘Victorian Lady’. Before leaving to work in the UK, Joan was employed by Kwik.Sew patterns which were based in Brisbane. Whist at Kwik.Sew she acted as their national promotions and sewing co-ordinator. During this period Joan wrote periodically for Australian Stitches magazine providing articles on ‘designer finishing techniques’.

For the Doncaster event, a sewing portfolio class is a great way of learning how to create a professional finish without having to make a complete garment. These sewing workshops are not suitable for novice sewers. The workshops are designed for people who can already sew garments and are comfortable with their sewing machine but want to know a few more tricks of the trade. You may not have sewn for some time and wish to refresh your skills. Professional pressing and interfacing techniques will also be discussed.

In the following workshops you will make a series of samples. You may take the samples home and store them in a folder (portfolio) for future reference. Upgrade your skills and book into these practical and enjoyable workshops today. Places are limited to 10 students per workshop and tickets can be purchased on the day from the Organiser's Office. This workshop and lecture programme is repeated on all 3 days.

Workshop 1, 10.30-11.35: The perfect dart, collar with wrapped corners - £10 per person

This workshop is ideal for the experienced sewer who wishes to update their sewing skills. You will learn how to create the perfect point on a dart, to sew a collar using a specific designer finishing technique and how to insert an invisible zipper.

Workshop 2, 11.40-12.45: Triangular bound buttonholes and jumped hem - £10 per person

Ideal for dressmakers and experienced home sewers who wish to learn professional finishing techniques: Add a couturier finish to your garments with triangular bound buttonholes. Avoid hand stitching the hem of lined skirts and gowns by learning the quick and easy method of a jumped hem.

Workshop 3, 12.50-13.55: Mock welt pocket and silk bound seams - £10 per person

Having problems stitching a welt pocket into a garment? This workshop will assist you in achieving perfect mock welt pockets for jackets, skirts and trousers. Experienced sewers will also learn how to bind the seams of an unlined jacket to add a signature finish to their garments.

Lecture 1, 14.30: Measure Up and Pattern Alteration - Free of charge

This lecture is a must for novice sewers and a great refresher for experienced sewers who wish to know more about how to make a commercial pattern fit perfectly. Joan will demonstrate how and where to measure your figure and illustrate where these measurments may be used on a commercial pattern to ensure a perfect fit. She will also offer tips on how to understand a commercial pattern, wearing and designer ease and will illustrate basic pattern alterations.

Lecture 2, 15.30: Colour, Style and Wardrobe planning - Free of charge

Do you have trouble choosing commercial patterns? Do you stand at the pattern bar turning page after page wondering if the designs that you like will suite your figure shape? Do you have an over crowed wardrobe but never have anything to wear? This lecture will help solve many of your wardrobe dilemmas. Learn these easy and simple tips and techniques on how to choose, patterns, prints, colours and textures to enhance your figure shape and make your wardrobe work for you.
